UTICA, N.Y. – The Husson University softball team's dynasty has continued after a 1-0 walk-off victory over Cazenovia College to clinch the Eagles' fifth straight North Atlantic Conference title and 12th overall on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior McKenna Smith did her part in the circle for the Eagles (30-12-1) as she held the Wildcats (23-17) to just two hits as she was rewarded offensively in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Seniors Teagan Blackie and Katie Raymond started off the offense with back-to-back base hits through the right side to set up two on and one out. Senior Olivia McCarty laid a sacrifice bunt to move Blackie and Raymond into scoring position with two outs. Sophomore Bulla McCabe played hero with a base hit up the middle to score Blackie and begin the celebrations.
Smith, NAC-Tournament MVP, earned her program-tying ninth shutout of the season and her program-breaking 20th victory of the season while striking out her 500th career batter in the green and gold.
McCarty, McCabe, Smith and junior Kenzie Dore were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The softball team will enjoy the long bus ride home and await their fate in the 2023 NCAA tournament as the selection show is next Monday.
