UTICA, N.Y. – The Husson University softball team has clinched their spot in the 2023 North Atlantic Conference championship series after a 2-1 extra inning victory over Thomas College on Monday afternoon at the campus of SUNY Poly.
It was the Terriers (16-14) who got on the board first in the third inning, as the Eagles responded in the fifth with a run of their own. A bases loaded walk by senior Katie Raymond allowed sophomore Kiara McLeod to score and level the game at one.
Seven innings wasn't enough as an extra inning was needed. In the eighth inning, Raymond was placed at second and senior Olivia McCarty successfully bunted Raymond over to third. Sophomore Bulla McCabe became the hero with a sacrifice-fly to center field to score Raymond, and make it 2-1 Husson.
Senior McKenna Smith closed out her complete game by keeping the Terriers off the scoreboard in the eighth.
The softball team will take on an opponent to be decided on tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. for the NAC championship. If the Eagles win then they claim their fifth straight title but if the TBD team wins then a winner-takes-all game will be played thirty minutes after the first game for an all-deciding championship game.
