NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Husson University baseball team lives to play another game as they defeated Tufts University, 5-2, in a NCAA regional elimination game on Sunday morning at Alumni Field on the campus of Mitchell College.
With the victory, the Eagles recorded an NCAA regional victory in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history and move to 25-18 on the season while Tufts finish the season at 31-11.
The Jumbos began the scoring in the third inning with two runs, before the Eagles responded via junior Jackson Curtis with a RBI-single to score sophomore Ty Knowlton.
Sophomore Connor Abood pitched six quality innings to keep the green and gold in the contest as he and the Eagles would be rewarded in the bottom of the seventh.
With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore Tanner Evans drove a double over the right-fielder's head to clear the bases, and make it 4-2 Husson. Curtis would cap off the scoring with a base hit to score Evans, and stretch the lead to 5-2.
Senior Alex Smith and junior Ryan Robb closed out the contest as they held the NESCAC champions to just two hits in 2.2 innings of work as the Eagles survived and advanced.
The baseball team will get a few hours off before taking on the losing team of Mitchell/Wheaton (Mass.) at 3:30 p.m. with a berth in the regional championship round on the line.
