NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Husson University baseball team had their season come to a close on Sunday afternoon after a score loss in 13 innings to No. 8 Wheaton College in a NCAA regional tournament elimination game at Alumni Field on the campus of Mitchell College. The Eagles finish the season with a 25-19 record while Wheaton's season continues at 39-7.
Husson and Wheaton College played a low-scoring affair as their was a combined two runs in regulation. The Lyons were able to score their run in the second inning, but the Eagles kept them off the scoreboard through the ninth thanks to forcing them to strand 12 runners on base.
The Eagles did all their offense with two outs in the ninth. Junior Jackson Curtis singled to left field, before being pinch-ran by junior Austin Snow. Snow advanced to third on a double from graduate student Ethan Stoddard, then scored when junior Akira Warren singled. Stoddard tried to win the game but was thrown out at home to end the inning.
The ballgame finished in the 13th inning as the Lyons were able to score twice, and the Eagles were unable to respond.
Senior Brand Burnell started the contest going an inning-plus before giving way to the bullpen. The bullpen of senior Chris Naylor, freshman Tanner Audyatis, junior Ryan Robb allowed just six hits to help the Eagles force extra innings. In extras, senior Conner Wagstaff, Jackson Thayer, and freshman Sully Beers appeared on the mound.
