Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Husson University baseball team began play in the 2023 NCAA tournament on Friday morning as they fell to the No. 8 Wheaton (Mass.) Lyons, 11-3, in their opening round regional contest at the campus of Mitchell College. With the loss, the Eagles fall to 24-18 while Wheaton improves to 38-6.
The Eagles recorded the opening two hits of the contest before the Lyons were able to open the scoring. In the second inning, the NEWMAC champions tallied their first two runs of the contest as they jumped out to a 8-0 lead after six innings of action.
The Eagles avoided the shutout by scoring three runs in the final three innings. In the seventh inning, freshman Hunter Curtis drove a double to left field to score junior Akira Warren.
In the ninth inning, H. Curtis drove in his second run of the game as he brought home graduate student Ethan Stoddard, who led the inning off with a double. H.Curtis scored, later in the inning, when freshman David York singled.
Sophomore Matt Wallingford started the contest on the mound as he went five-plus innings before giving way to the bullpen. Junior Zain Fitzsimmons, freshman Sully Beers, freshman Ben Phillips, sophomore Ryne Rametta, and junior Jackson Thayer all saw action in the final 2.2 innings pitched.
Saturday has been washed out so the baseball team will look to extend their season on Sunday when they face Tufts University in an 8:30 a.m. elimination game.
