BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team completed the four-game season series with the Hornets of Northern Vermont-Lyndon after taking a Sunday afternoon doubleheader over their North Atlantic Conference foe. The Eagles (9-9, 4-0 NAC) took game one, 9-2, before winning game two, 6-2, over NVU-Lyndon (3-16, 0-4 NAC).
Game One: Husson 9, NVU-Lyndon 2
The Hornets were able to score the first run of the contest before the Eagles tied it in the bottom half of the first when graduate student Ethan Stoddard hit a RBI-sacrifice fly.
The Eagles would go on to string together eight of the final nine runs scored in the contest including five RBI by sophomore Tanner Evans for the 9-2 victory. The Old Town native finished a home run away from the cycle as he went 4-for-4 in game one.
Junior Akira Warren was also 4-for-4 while freshman Hunter Curtis drove in two runs.
On the mound, senior Brandon Brunell pitched five innings before senior Alex Smith closed out the game by going two innings. The pitching staff allowed two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
Game Two: Husson 6, NVU-Lyndon 2
The host scored a run in each of the first two innings as junior Jackson Curtis singled down the left field line to score Evans before Evans drove in a run on his own with a single.
The Hornets brought the lead to within one before Warren drove in H. Curtis on a ground out in the fourth inning. The Hornets would respond with another run in the fifth inning.
Stoddard, with a runner on, would put the game to bed in the bottom half of the fifth as he smashed a homer off the scoreboard for a two-run shot. Warren added the exclamation point in the sixth as he scored from second on a failed pickoff attempt.
On the mound, sophomore Connor Abood pitched a complete game including ten strikeouts to earn his first win of the season.
It's back to non-conference action on Tuesday as they baseball team will travel to Bates for a nine-inning contest in Lewiston. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
