BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team began their North Atlantic Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon as they swept the doubleheader over Northern Vermont-Lyndon at the Winkin Sports Complex. The Eagles won the first game in walkout fashion, 4-3, before cruising in game two, 8-3. Husson is now 7-9 and 2-0 in the NAC while NVU-Lyndon are 3-14 and 0-2 in the NAC.
Game One: Husson 4, NVU-Lyndon 3 in 7 innings
The Eagles led off the scoring in the second with back-to-back hits from freshman Hunter Curtis (RBI-double) and senior Brent Riffe (RBI-single) to give Husson a 2-0 lead. The Hornets responded in the third inning with two of their own to tie the game.
In the fourth, the Eagles regained the lead as junior Akira Warren drove in H. Curtis to make it 3-2. The Hornets would level the game again in the seventh as it was 3-3 heading into the bottom half of the inning with the top of the order up.
After a ground out, sophomore Tanner Evans stepped up, and launched his first collegiate home run over the left field wall to give Husson the walkout victory.
Sophomore Matt Wallingford pitched a quality six innings as he allowed three runs on three hits before junior Ryan Robb entered the game and earned the victory on the mound.
Game Two: Husson 8, NVU-Lyndon 3 in 9 innings
The offense got clicking in the first inning with graduate Kobe Rogerson recording a RBI-single before a passed ball gave Husson a quick 2-0 lead. H. Curtis scored via a wild pitch to extend the lead to three after two innings.
The Hornets scored twice to make it 3-2 before the Eagles tallied five of the next six runs capped off by a first collegiate homer from H. Curtis for the 8-3 victory.
Sophomore Ryne Rametta started the contest going a solid five innings of four-hit ball before junior Zain Fitzsimmonds and freshman Tanner Audyatis closed out the game.
Easter baseball is next on the docket for the baseball team when they close out their season series with the Hornets with a doubleheader set for 1:00 p.m. tomorrow at the Winkin Sports Complex.
