BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team picked up their first home victory of the season on Thursday evening as they took down the University of Maine at Presque Isle with a 6-4 scoreline.
The Eagles (5-9) were able to get on the board first with a RBI-single from junior Akira Warren to score graduate student Kobe Rogerson. That ended up being the lone run scored in the first four innings.
In the fifth inning, freshman David York drove in a run followed by a two-run RBI-single from sophomore Tyler Michaud to make it 4-0 Husson.
The Owls (1-16) were held scoreless in the first five innings thanks in large part to senior Brandon Burnell. The right-hander made his first start in over a year as he pitched three one-hit innings while striking out five Owl batters.
UMPI was able to score twice in the sixth, but Rogerson canceled out one of the runs in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly. The score was 5-2 after six innings.
In the seventh, the Owls added two runs, but again the Eagles responded with a sacrifice fly this time being from freshman Keegan Cyr.
Junior Zain Fitzsimmons pitched a dominating final 2.2 innings to shut the door for the Eagles.
Juniors Jackson Thayer and Ryan Penney as well as freshmen Mason Cycenas-Heimer and Ben Phillips made an appearance in relief for the green and gold.
The road to a third straight conference championship begins this weekend for the baseball team as they open conference play. The Hornets of Northern-Vermont Lyndon will make the trip to the Winkin for a four-game set with doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch for both days is 1:00 p.m.
