WATERVILLE, Maine — The Husson University softball team battled Colby College on the road Wednesday evening in a matchup of two regionally ranked in-state foes falling 3-2 in game one before dropping the finale 9-8.
Husson (24-12) and Colby (19-11) remained scoreless through the opening four innings of game one before senior
Teagan Blackie connected on a single through the left side that plated senior
McKenna Smith for a 1-0 advantage.
The Mules managed to even the game with a run of their own in the sixth inning, but Blackie plated her second run of the game on an RBI fielder's choice to give Husson a 2-1 lead, however, Colby homered in the bottom half of the inning to force extra innings.
Husson began the top half of the eighth inning with a runner on second and benefited from a single by junior
Jess Pomerleau that put runners on the corners. Pomerleau would advance to second on a stolen base, but Colby would get the final two outs of the inning to send the game to the bottom of the eighth where the Mules were able to walk it off and earn the 3-2 decision.
Senior
Katie Raymond finished 2-4 at the plate for the Eagles, while Smith recorded a 3-3 performance with a double and a triple. Smith also tossed 7.1 innings scattering six hits and striking out nine batters.
Wednesday's non-conference finale began with a four-run inning for the Eagles in the top of the first, beginning with a two-RBI single by sophomore
Tatyanna Biamby and another two-RBI single from freshman
Emily Dunbar.
The Mules benefited from a three-run inning of their own in the bottom half of the frame to pull within 4-3 of the Eagles, but junior Oliva McCarty drove in a run in the second inning to extend the lead to 5-3.
Colby got a run back in the bottom of the second, however, Husson answered with two runs in the third to push the deficit back to 7-4 on a two-RBI double from freshman
Morgan Curtis.
That lead was shorted live though because in the bottom of the third, Colby managed to push four runs across to take an 8-7 lead.
However, Blackie drove in her third run of the evening in the fifth inning to tie the game 8-8 on a single to right center, but Colby drove in the eventual winning run in the bottom of the fifth and held on for the 9-8 win.
Biamby finished 2-3 at the plate for the Eagles, scoring three runs while Blackie added another two-hit performance.
The Eagles will look to return to their winning ways on Saturday when they travel to Presque Isle, Maine for a doubleheader against the University of Maine-Presque Isle with the first game of the doubleheader counting towards conference standings.
