PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Senior
McKenna Smith made Husson University softball history on Sunday becoming the first pitcher in program history to throw a seven-inning perfect game helping the Eagles sweep the University of Maine-Presque Isle 12-0 in both matchups on Saturday.
Husson (26-12, 10-0 NAC) battled Presque Isle (12-21, 5-5 NAC) on the road Saturday afternoon with the opening game of the Eagles doubleheader counting towards North Atlantic Conference standings.
The Eagles wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning with an RBI single from sophomore
Bulla McCabe for the early 1-0 edge.
Smith helped her own cause with an RBI double in the second inning, while senior
Katie Raymond scored Smith on a sacrifice fly out for a 3-0 lead.
Husson tallied another run in the top of the second inning to extend its advantage to 4-0, before Smith drove in her second run of the afternoon in the sixth inning for a 5-0 cushion.
The Eagles bats came alive in the top of the seventh inning, exploding for seven runs including a two-run homerun by sophomore
Tori Exel and another two-run homerun from senior
Teagan Blackie.
However, one run was all Smith needed in the opening game, because the senior tossed seven perfect innings retiring all 21 batters she faced, 16 by way of the strikeout. Smith's record-setting afternoon marked the sixth perfect game in program history, but the first complete game gem.
Offensively, the Eagles recorded 16 hits in the opening matchup, junior Oliva McCarty finished 2-3, McCabe added a 2-5 performance while Exel posted a three-hit game followed by junior
Kenzie Dore, Smith and Blackie all recording two hits apiece.
In the finale, Husson would be held off the board in the first two innings, but benefited greatly from a 12-run third inning to come away with the 12-0 decision.
Raymond began the Eagles scoring, connecting on an RBI single, while McCarty plated Raymond for the second run.
Exel and Dore each tallied back-to-back RBI's, while the Eagles also took advantage of several Owls miscue to open a 7-0 lead before junior
Jess Pomerleau plated Blackie on an RBI single.
Following Pomerleau, McCarty drove in her second and third runs of the inning while Dore also notched her second RBI of the inning to put the Eagles up 12-0.
That would be all the run support freshman
Emily Rerick would need as the freshman tossed five scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out three.
Offensively, the Eagles recorded their second double-digit hit performance on the day while McCarty and Dore each tallying two hits apiece.
Husson will now turn its attention to the upcoming NAC championship tournament this coming weekend in Utica, New York.
