BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University softball team improved to 8-0 on the North Atlantic Conference following a pair of hard-fought wins over the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Wednesday, earning a 3-2 walk off in game one followed by a 6-4 decision in game two.
Presque Isle (10-15, 4-2 NAC) struck for the first run in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader to take a 1-0 advantage. The Eagles would put runners on throughout the opening four innings, but were unable to push anything across.
However, Husson (20-10, 8-0 NAC) tied the game in the fifth inning, taking advantage of junior
Kenzie Dore's infield single to kick off a sequence of events that allowed junior
Jess Pomerleau to score the tying run.
The Eagles and Owls played to a 1-1 tie over the final two innings forcing a deciding eighth inning.
Presque Isle managed to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth, but that lead was short lived because senior
Jill Bisson singled to center field scoring Dore to tie the game 2-2. That's when senior
Teagan Blackie connected on an RBI double to left center that plated Bisson for the winning run to give the Eagles a 3-2 victory.
Senior
McKenna Smith got the start for the Eagles in game one, tossing eight innings allowing just four hits and striking out 15 batters. Sophomore
Bulla McCabe finished 2-4 at the plate for the Eagles, while Bisson recorded a 3-4 performance with a clutch RBI and arguably the biggest run of the game.
In game two of Thursday's conference battle, the Owls took a 1-0 edge with a run in the first inning, but McCabe doubled in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 1-1.
Dore would give the Eagles a 2-1 lead with an RBI double in the third inning, while sophomore
Kiara McLeod plated Dore on an RBI single to push the Eagles advantage to 3-1.
Husson added three more runs in the fifth inning, Dore kicked off the scoring with another RBI, singling through the left side to score freshman
Lydia Rice who entered as a pinch runner.
The Eagles would score the eventually winning run on a wild pitch before adding an insurance run a pitch later following an UMPI passed ball.
The Owls battled back over the final two innings of play, scoring two runs in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 6-3 and added another run in the seventh inning to pull within 6-4 of the Eagles.
However, freshman
Danielle Masterson who entered the circle in relief of freshman starter
Emily Rerick got the Owls to ground out for the final out.
Rerick went five innings for the Eagles allowing just one earned run and striking out three batters, while Masterson threw the final two innings allowing two hits and striking out one.
Dore finished 2-3 at the dish with two RBI's while McCabe, senior
Katie Raymond and junior
Olivia McCarty all recorded two-hit performances.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday when they host Thomas College at 1 p.m. for senior day.
