BANGOR, Maine - Husson University falls to State University of New York at Canton, 15-14, in a hotly contested North Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse contest at Boucher Field on Saturday morning.
Husson (6-4, 2-1 NAC) had all the momentum early and held a 1-0 lead after senior
Sophia Gomez netted an unassisted with 13:40 left in the opening frame. Senior Casey Pelton put the Roos on the board with an unassisted strike at the 11:57 mark of the first quarter before junior Morgan Montgomery received a nice pass from senior Samantha Dayter and fired it pass Husson sophomore keeper
Emily Godfrey 35 seconds later to make it a 2-1 game. A junior Lindsey Wunder goal gave SUNY Canton (4-6, 2-0 NAC) a 3-1 advantage going into the second quarter.

Devyn Veits netted goals in a matter of 39 seconds to kick off the second period scoring to tie the game at 3-3 before freshman Caroline Nappi gave the Roos the lead back with 10:44 remaining in the second stanza.

Averi Baker then took the game over by tying it at 4-4 on a women-up advantage before setting up sophomore
Natalie Whitten go-ahead goal at the 8:51 mark of the second. But momentum quickly swung back in the Roos' favor, as SUNY Canton proceeded to register five unanswered goals over the following 12 minutes to build a 9-5 advantage with 11:15 left in the third period.
After being held scoreless for nearly 13 minutes, the Eagles finally got back on the board when Veits found the back of the net at the 10:46 mark of the third. Two minutes later, Whitten cut the Roo lead to two when she tallied a women-up goal but back-to-back goals by sophomore Maddy Caron gave SUNY Canton their four goal cushion back with 7:05 left in the third.
Whitten and Martinez each scored again for the Eagles in the closing moments of the third however SUNY Canton took a 13-9 game into the fourth after Wunder and Dayter hit pay dirt in the final seconds of the quarter.
The NAC rivals opened the fourth frame by swapping scores twice before Husson potted their comeback effort in the remaining minutes of the game. Baker scored her second women-up goal of the game off a pass by Whitten with 4:32 remaining. Then Veits scored her own women-up goal 23 seconds later off an assist by sophomore
Maddy Benoit after Martinez won the proceeding draw.
Husson once again won the draw but turn it over quickly after a Husson foul Benoit forced a turnover and the Eagles ran the ball toward the Roo net. Once the Eagles arrived into their offensive zone, Gomez was fouled and awarded a free position shot which she proceed in netting her 17th goal on the season to make the game 15-14 with 1:41 left on the clock.
The Eagles were awarded the ensuing draw control victory after a SUNY Canton player was issued a yellow card. Husson quickly moved the ball back into their offensive zone and once again was fouled inside the penalty zone. Benoit was award the free-position shot and on her attempt Roo senior goalkeeper Olivia Scott made the save to secure the victory.
The Roos held the advantages in shots (34-29), shots on goal (24-20), ground balls (35-27), and draw controls (17-16).
Godfrey earned the loss after making eight saves in 42:33 minutes while sophomore
Emma Begin made one save in 17:27 minutes of relief duty. Scott made six saves for the Roos to earn the win.
Veits netted career high five goals on six shots with an assist, five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Whitten scored three goals with two assists and a ground ball. Baker added two goals, an assist, a ground ball, a caused turnover and a draw control. Gomez chipped in with two goals, an assist, a ground ball and four draw controls. Junior
Abigail Booth picked up three ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Dayter registered four goals and four assists with a ground ball, two caused turnovers and six draw controls to the lead SUNY Canton on the morning. Wunder scored three goals with a four ground balls and a draw control. Montgomery, Nappi, Pelton and Carron each tallied two goals apiece, while Montgomery and Pelton added an assist.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow when they host Northern Vermont University-Lyndon at Boucher Field for a 12 p.m. NAC contest.
