BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University softball team picked up a non-conference sweep against Plymouth State University on Thursday at home by finals of 6-0 and 5-1 to win its 10th-straight contest.
Husson (16-10) benefited from great pitching in game one of Thursday's doubleheader as senior
McKenna Smith put on a show for the Eagles on her way to a season-high 17 strikeouts for the game.
Smith struck out the side to begin the afternoon, giving way for her offense to score two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two RBI single from sophomore
Kiara McLeod.
Smith would strikeout the side again in both the second and third inning, tiring the first nine batters of the game by strikeout.
The Eagles tallied two more runs in the second inning, scoring their first on an RBI single by sophomore
Bulla McCabe and their second on a Panthers miscue.
Plymouth State (11-11) connected on their lone hit in the top of the fourth inning, moving a runner into scoring position on a stolen base, but Smith struck out the next three batters to retire the side.
Husson recorded two more runs in the fifth inning, scoring both off a two RBI single from senior
Jill Bisson.
That would be all Smith would need as she allowed just one hit over seven innings, improving to 10-4 on the season while McCabe tallied two hits for the Eagles.
In the second game, the Panthers managed to put runners on in the first inning following two hits, but senior
Katie Raymond threw a bullet to third base to end the inning, before driving in the first two runs in the second inning on a two RBI single up the middle.
McLeod added her third RBI of the afternoon in the third inning on a single to left center that scored junior
Kenzie Dore to give Husson a 3-1 advantage.
The Panthers got a run back in the fourth inning, but Husson answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-1 edge.
Junior
Jess Pomerleau took advantage of a Panthers miscue in the outfield to score, while McCabe scored Raymond on a sacrifice flyout.
Freshman
Emily Rerick got the start in the circle for the Eagles in game two, pitching five solid innings, scattering six hits and striking out five batters. Fellow freshman
Danielle Masterson pitched the final two innings for Husson, allowing only two hits and recording three strikeouts.
Both Raymond and McLeod tallied two hits apiece for the Eagles, while Raymond led the way with two RBI.
Husson turns its attention back to North Atlantic Conference play on Saturday when it hosts the University of Maine at Farmington for a noon doubleheader as the Eagles will host their StrikeOut Cancer Game.
