KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Husson University softball team picked up two wins on Thursday beating Kenyon College 8-0 in five innings before hanging on for a 3-2 decision over Catholic University in the doubleheader finale.
Husson (5-5) took a 2-0 advantage in the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader against Kenyon (1-6) on a two-RBI single by sophomore
Kiara McLeod.
The Eagles extended their advantage in the third inning scoring five runs to push the lead to 7-0, adding two more runs on another two-RBI single by McLeod, one run on an RBI groundout from freshman
Morgan Tainter, along with runs by freshman
Angelina Fucci and McLeod.
Husson added its eighth and game clinching run in the fourth inning off a Kenyon error before freshman
Danielle Masterson slammed the door on the Owls to earn her first collegiate victory.
Masterson tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out four batters. McLeod finished 2-2 at the plate for four RBI's while junior
Kenzie Dore finished 1-1 with two runs and two walks.
In the Eagles second game of the day, senior
McKenna Smith dominated on the mound for Husson pitching seven innings, allowing only four hits and striking out nine batters.
Husson, took a 1-0 edge over the Cardinals in the third inning when sophomore
Tori Exel laced a single up the middle that plated Fucci for her third run of the day.
Junior
Jess Pomerleau who entered as a pinch run for the Eagles in the fourth inning scored on a wild pitch to extend Husson's lead to 2-0 before adding the deciding run on an RBI single from senior
Katie Raymond that scored freshman
Lydia Rice.
Catholic (5-5) got two unearned runs back in the sixth inning to pull within 3-2 of the Eagles and managed to put the potential tying and winning run on second and third in the bottom of the ninth inning, but a Smith forced a fly ball out to lockdown the win for Husson.
Husson finished the game with nine hits as Fucci, Raymond, Exel and sophomore
Bulla McCabe all tallied two hits apiece for the Eagles in the win.
The Eagles close out their spring break trip on Friday against York College of Pennsylvania at 9 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. game against Misericordia University.
