KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Husson University softball split its final doubleheader of its spring break trip on Friday beating York College of Pennsylvania 3-2 before falling to Misericordia University 5-3 in the finale.
In the opening game of the day Husson (6-6) took a 1-0 lead following the opening inning, scoring the first run of the game when sophomore
Tori Exel tripled down the right field line scoring junior
Kenzie Dore.
The Eagles struck for two more runs in the third inning taking a 3-0 lead on a two-RBI single by sophomore
Bulla McCabe that plated Exel and senior
Katie Raymond.
York (3-4) cut into Husson's lead with an unearned run in the sixth inning to pull with 3-1 and added a second unearned run in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Spartans would put runners on the corners with one out in the seventh, but senior
McKenna Smith forced a popup to retire the side and give the Eagles the 3-2 decision.
Smith went the distance for Husson allowing seven hits and striking out six batters while McCabe recorded two hits.
In Husson's final game of its 2023 spring break trip Misericordia struck for two runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 advantage before adding two more runs in the third inning to extend its advantage to 4-0.
The Eagles got on the board in the fifth inning, plating a run on junior
Olivia McCarty's RBI triple, but Misericordia homered in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-1 lead.
Husson didn't go down without a fight as sophomore
Kiara McLeod single to center field in the sixth inning to score Dore and McCabe tallied her third RBI of the day on an RBI single down the left field line that played junior
Jess Pomerleau who entered as a pinch runner.
The Eagles would put a runner on in the top half of the seventh inning, but Misericordia doubled off the Eagles to hang on for the 5-3 decision.
With spring break in the books, Husson will turn its attention to No.1 Christopher Newport University on Mar. 17 for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader.
