NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— The Husson University softball team dropped a pair of doubleheader games to No. 2 Christopher Newport University on the road Friday afternoon 4-0 and 8-0.
CNU (9-3) struck for the eventual winning run in the first inning of Friday's opening game off a solo homerun.
Husson (6-8) loaded the bases in the third inning beginning the frame with a leadoff double by freshman
Morgan Curtis and a bunt single by senior
Teagan Blackie. CNU benefited from back-to-back strikeouts before walking junior
Kenzie Dore to load the bases, but the Eagles were unable to push a run across to even the contest.
The Captains added to their lead in the fifth inning with two runs to take a 3-0 edge before homering in the sixth inning to earn the 4-0 game one win.
Senior
McKenna Smith finished with nine strikeouts in the loss allowing just six hits while Blackie finished 2-2 at the plate.
Game two would start the same way as game one with CNU taking an early 1-0 lead following the opening frame.
The Eagles put runners on in the first two innings following singles and managed to put the leadoff hitter on to open the fourth inning, but were unable to push anything across to even the matchup.
Christopher Newport tallied two runs in the bottom half of the inning to extend its advantage to 3-0 before adding five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to walk off with the 8-0 decision.
Freshman
Emily Rerick got the start for the Eagles in game two pitching 4.2 innings allowing just two earned runs and striking out five batters.
Husson will look to get back into the win column on Saturday when it battles No. 6 Virginia Wesleyan University in the final two games of its Cross Bay Bash Invitational.
