DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Husson University baseball team won their first regional game of the season as they defeated Gordon College, 13-3 in seven innings, on Monday evening at Northeast Regional Park at the RussMatt Invitational.
It took just four batters for the Eagles (2-2) to take the lead as they took advantage of three walks and a hit by pitch in the inning. The run was scored by junior Akira Warren as graduate student Kobe Rogerson singled to the left side of the infield. The Fighting Scots (1-3) would respond in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own.
The Eagles blew the game open in the second inning with six runs as four different players drove in runs including junior Jackson Curtis, Rogerson, graduate student Ethan Stoddard and two from sophomore Tanner Evans as the Eagles were up 7-1 after two innings.
Gordon College responded in the third inning with a run, but the Eagles scored two in the next half inning. Sophomore Ty Knowlton grounded out in which Jackson Curtis scored, then Rogerson scored on a passed ball as Husson held a 9-3 lead after four innings.
With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the sixth; the Eagles continued to pile on the runs. Knowlton walked to bring home Jackson Curtis for the third time today before Evans singled to left to score two more runs. In the next inning, Rogerson finished off the scoring in style with a RBI-triple to center field as the Eagles wrapped up the victory.
Evans finished the day with four RBI on two hits while Rogerson went 3-for-3 on the night.
Sophomore Ryne Rametta made his first collegiate start and the right hander threw five innings and allowed three runs on three hits as he struck out three. Freshman Tanner Audyatis, made his first collegiate appearance in relief and the Massachusetts native went the final two innings as he struck out four and gave up two hits.
It's a trip back to Davenport for the baseball team as they will take on Concordia College of Minnesota tomorrow for a doubleheader at Lake Myrtle Sports Park with the first game set for 3:30 p.m.
