Smith's four-hitter lifts softball to spilt with Mount Union, Illinois College

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Husson University split a pair of games in The Spring Games at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex on Sunday. The Eagles opened play with a 1-0 setback to the University of Mount Union and closed the day out with a 3-0 win over Illinois College.

The first game of the day turned out to be a pitcher's duel, as Mount Union (1-0) freshman starter Kendyll Cahill and Husson (2-2) hurlers' freshman Emily Rerick and senior McKenna Smith faced off to allow just one run in the game.

The Purple Raiders scored what proved to be the only run of the game with two-outs in the top of the second inning, when freshman Kaityln Culver doubled to left to score sophomore Amanda Bish, who led-off the inning with a single up the middle with the lone run of the game.

Rerick (0-1) pitched quite well but suffered the loss despite allowing one run off four hits with two K's in six innings. Smith allowed two hits with two punch-outs in one scoreless inning of relief.

In game two, Husson took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off an RBI bases loaded infield single by sophomore Bulla McCabe. The Eagles added two insurance runs in the top of third inning when sophomore Kiara McLeod doubled to right field plating both freshman Payson Kaler and junior Kenzie Dore and Smith held Illinois College (1-3) at bay in the final four frames for the 3-0 victory.

Smith (2-0) earned the win with seven four-hit, scoreless innings, while striking-out 12. McCabe was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Angelina Fucci went 2-for-3 with a run and a double. McLeod was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

The Eagles will play the College of Saint Benedict at 9 a.m. and the University of Rochester at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow.
