NEWPORT, R.I. – The Husson University baseball team opened their challenging regional schedule on Saturday afternoon with a pair of losses to Salve Regina at Reynolds Field. The Eagles fell in game one, 8-3, before being shutout in game two, 3-0. With the pair of losses, the Eagles fall to 4-5 while the Seahawks move to 7-3.
Game One: Salve Regina 8, Husson 3
A RBI-single in the second inning helped the host take a 2-0 lead as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead through five innings. The lone Eagles' run was scored in the third when a throwing error allowed freshman Hunter Curtis to score.
In the final three innings, the Eagles outscored the Seahawks, 2-1, as junior Akira Warren scored via a balk in the sixth inning, and sophomore Ty Knowlton hit his first collegiate homer in the ninth as the host won game one.
Warren and Rogerson paced the offense in the first game by each recording two hits while Knowlton recorded the lone RBI.
Junior Conner Wagstaff started the contest for the innings as he allowed four earned runs on five hits, and struck out four in three-plus innings of work. Sophomore Matt Wallingford, freshman Sully Beers, junior Zain Fitzsimmons, and junior Chris Naylor pitched the final five-plus innings as they combined for one earned run on two hits, and three strikeouts.
Game Two: Salve Regina 3, Husson 0
A low-scoring affair for the second game of the doubleheader as the Seahawks scored the only runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Sophomore Conner Abood pitched a solid five innings for the Eagles as he allowed three hits, and struck out a batter. Junior Alex Smith, sophomore Ryan Robb, and freshman Tanner Audyatis earned relief appearances as they combined to allow three runs on seven hits, and three strikeouts.
The baseball team will head back on the road on Sunday, Mar. 26th when they travel to fellow 2022 NCAA tournament member, Mitchell College, in Conn., for a pair of games with the first game set for noon time.
