NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Husson University baseball team made the journey to southern Connecticut to take on the reigning NECC Champions of Mitchell College on Sunday afternoon as the Eagles dropped both games of the doubleheader. The Eagles battled the Mariners in game one before falling 17-8 followed by a 6-2 loss in game two. With the losses, the Eagles are now 4-8 while the Mariners are 13-3.
Game One: Mitchell 17, Husson 8
It didn't long for the Eagles to get on the board as junior Akira Warren led off the inning with a double up the middle. Sophomore Tanner Evans bunted him over to third, then graduate student Kobe Rogerson brought Warren home with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Mariners responded with three runs in the bottom of the second then another run in the third separated by junior Warren recording his first collegiate homer.
Mitchell College held a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning when the Eagles drove in five runs to take a 7-4 lead. Rogerson drove in Warren on a sacrifice fly for the second time of the game followed by freshman David York and senior Brett Riffe each driving in a run via a single. Freshman Keegan Cyr capped off the inning with a two-run single to left field.
The Mariners scored 13 of the final 14 combined run to take the game one.
Offensively for the Eagles, Warren and York each recorded three hits and a RBI while Rogerson and Cyr each drove in two runs.
Senior Conner Wagstaff started the game as he went just under two innings before giving way for junior Zain Fitzsimmonds. Sophomore Matt Wallingford, junior Ryan Robb, junior Jackson Thayer, junior Ryan Penney, and sophomore Ryne Rametta each appeared for the Eagles on the mound.
Game Two: Mitchell 6, Husson 2
The Mariners scored the first six runs to begin game two. The Eagles avoided the shutout in the top of the seventh thanks to freshmen Hunter Curtis and David York each recording a RBI-single.
Sophomore Connor Abood earned the start as he went less than an inning before giving way to Alex Smith. The senior went 4.2 innings as he allowed a solo run on four hits. Freshman Tanner Audyatis pitched the final inning and also gave up a run.
The baseball team will return home for their first home games of the season next weekend when they take on SUNY Canton for a four-game non-conference weekend series starting on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
