BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team remained unbeaten in North Atlantic Conference play as it defeated SUNY Morrisville 1-0 on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Boucher Field.
Husson (7-3-3, 3-0 NAC) would find the scorebook first as sophomore Carlos Etchevers was able to fire the ball into the back of the net off of a save from the Morrisville (3-8-2, 3-2 NAC) goalkeeper to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Etchevers and freshman Hugo Llopiz would each have a quality chance on net in the remaining time of the opening 45 minutes, but were unable to convert as the lead remained 1-0 for Husson at the half.
The Mustangs were able to create a handful of opportunities in the second half, but the Eagle defense was able to hold strong and earn the clean sheet.
Junior Alex Rechsteiner earned his fifth shutout of the season and his 15th for his career while saving all three shots that he faced.
Husson outshot Morrisville 14-5 for the game and doubled the Mustangs up in the shots on goal category, as it held a 6-3 edge.
"Today wasn't the best of games," said head men's soccer coach Gavin Penny. "It was ugly and scrappy in parts, but I thought we did well to fight through it. I liked Morrisville, I thought they had some very good players. They made it difficult for us to play our game but we took one of the chances when it presented itself, and sometimes that's all it takes. It was a great win for us and it was important for us to get back to winning ways after Colby interrupted our run. Poly will be another tough test for us tomorrow. Hopefully we can get ourselves ready for another battle.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow when they host another New York foe in SUNY Poly on senior day. Tomorrow's conference affair is set to kick-off at 2:30 p.m.
