BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team suffered a senior day defeat versus SUNY Poly by the final score of, 2-1, in North Atlantic Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Boucher Field.
It didn't take long for SUNY Poly (7-4-0, 5-0-0 NAC) to find the opener as they did so in the 13th minute. The Wildcats continued to find chances as the Eagles' (7-4-3, 3-1-0 NAC) defense and junior Alex Rechsteiner kept the green and gold in the contest as they was given a lifeline in the 38th minute.
Junior Pablo Maroto sent a cross into the box which went right through the goalkeeper's hands as junior Gavin Carr was there to tuck ball home for his first collegiate goal.
The visitors would respond on the stroke of halftime and take a 2-1 lead into the final 45 minutes of action.
Despite six shots in the second half; the Eagles were only able to put one on goal as the New York school came away with the victory.
Rechsteiner made six saves in 67 minutes of action before giving way to freshman Samuel Bermudez who didn't face a shot in his relief appearance.
"It's a disappointing performance from us today. We just didn't seem ready for the battle in the first half and we gave them a lead twice. I thought we were better in the second half, but we didn't do enough in their box to score the goals. Poly wanted it more and got what they deserved. It's disappointing that it's been such a long time since we lost a regular season conference game (22 games), and we let it go in such a way. Wednesday is a massive game for us, we need to make sure we respond."
Wednesday the men's soccer returns to in-division action as the Beavers of UMaine-Farmington visits Boucher Field for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
