BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men's soccer team dropped its non-conference finale on Tuesday evening, as the Eagles fell at the hands of Colby College by a score of 3-0 at Boucher Field.
The first half was an evenly-matched, defensive battle that saw neither team attempt a shot for the first 25 minutes of play and had just four total shot attempts in the opening frame. Colby (4-2-2) held a slight edge in possession during the first 45 minutes as they managed to maintain control of the ball 51% of the time, compared to Husson's (6-3-3) 49%.
The Mules were quick to jump out to a lead to open the second half as Luke Pentikis put Colby ahead 1-0 as he slid a ball from the left corner of the six-yard box in between the near-side post and the glove of junior goalie Alex Rechsteiner.
Colin Leon and Mario Simoes were able to add insurance goals for the Mules in the 65th and 78th minutes as Colby picked up the 3-0 non-conference win.
Both teams attempted eight shots during the contest, but it was the Mules who held the advantage in shots on goal, as they fired four shots on target, while the Eagles managed just two. Colby also held an edge in corner kicks as they tallied 10 on the evening, while Husson could only muster two.
Rechsteiner manned the net for the Eagles and made one save on four shots on goal.
"It's a very disappointing result given our performance," said head men's soccer coach Gavin Penny. "It's never easy taking on teams of Colby's caliber, but I thought we went toe to toe with them and I am pleased with how we played. We defended well for most of the game, and created some good chances to score goals. In the end, the difference between the two teams was quality in the final third. Unfortunately, we were not good enough to put away our chances and against teams like Colby, you get punished. It's very frustrating because we don't feel like it was a 3-0 game. We'll take from the game what we can and get ourselves ready for a long weekend."
Husson will now turn its attention back to North Atlantic Conference action as it will host two games this weekend. First up, a duel with NAC newcomer SUNY Morrisville on Saturday afternoon with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m.
