BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University volleyball team dropped a five-set North Atlantic Conference matchup with the University of Maine-Presque Isle by a score of 3-2 at Newman Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Husson (4-13, 4-3 NAC) looked to have secured a decisive opening-set victory as they jumped out to a 23-12 lead. UMPI (6-11, 6-4 NAC) didn't quit, as they got to within 23-18 and 24-21, but a kill from graduate student Cheyenne Young put the comeback bid to bed and wrapped up a 25-21 set victory for the Eagles.
The Owls put Husson on the ropes as they recorded back-to-back set wins as they took the second set 25-20, in addition to winning set three 25-18.
The Eagles forced a deciding fifth set as they raced out to a 24-17 lead and fought off another UMPI comeback to earn the 25-20 fourth set win.
Husson dug themselves a deep hole in the final set as the Owls led 11-2 early on and ended up taking the set 15-4 to capture the NAC victory.
Freshman Janna Preskorn tallied 19 kills on the afternoon to lead the Eagles, while Young also finished in double-digits with 13 kills.
Junior Alyvia McIntyre dished out a game-high 41 assists for Husson, while sophomore Leah Peloquin led the Eagle's defense with 21 digs.
Husson will have the week off before going on a two-game Vermont road trip next weekend. The first game of the weekend will take place at Vermont State University Johnson on Saturday afternoon with first-serve set for 12 p.m.
