Volleyball hangs on for five-set thriller against VTSU Johnson

BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University volleyball team held on for a thrilling 3-2 North Atlantic Conference victory at home Sunday against Vermont State University Johnson.

Husson (3-10, 3-1 NAC) jumped out to an early 1-0 edge following a 25-17 set-one victory, but VTSU Johnson (5-9, 1-1 NAC) rebounded with a 25-20 set-two win to even the match 1-1.

The Eagles claimed the third set 25-21 to take a 2-1 led, however Johnson evened the match again 2-2 with a 25-22 of its own.

Sunday's conference showdown came down to a deciding fifth set. Husson wasted little time getting off to a strong start in the final frame, jumping out to an early lead and beating the Badgers to the side-switching eighth point and opened up an 11-2 advantage before Johnson clawed its way back into the set 14-11. However, junior Alexa Beal powered home her team-high 11th kill to give us the 15-11 win.

Freshman Janna Preskorn matched Beal with a team-high 11 kills, while freshman Maddie Sheppard collected a career-high eight kills and junior Cam Schweitzer powered home seven.

Junior Alyvia McIntyre recorded a game-high 21 assists, while graduate student Cheyenne Young dished out 18 assists for the match.

Additionally, McIntyre scooped up a team-high 13 digs and Preskorn tallied an additional 11 digs.

Husson will travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts on Saturday for a NAC meeting against Lesley University.
