WATERVILLE, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball team used a big run in the fourth quarter as they escaped Larry Mahaney Gymnasium with a 66-54 North Atlantic Conference victory over Thomas College on Friday night.
The Eagles (14-6, 8-1 NAC) jumped out to a 12-2 lead before the Terriers (2-17,1-8 NAC) battled back into the contest with five straight points to end the first quarter with the Eagles up 12-7. The Terriers run would continue into the second quarter with back-to-back field goals as the Terriers tied the game at 13 early in the second. Sophomore Sophia McVicar would regain the lead for the green and gold with a three as she started a 14-5 run to stretch the Eagles' lead back to nine. In the final minute of the first half, the Terriers would score five straight points as the Eagles led, 29-25, at the end of 20 minutes.
It was an even third quarter that saw the Eagles outscore the Terriers, 18-17, and expand their lead to five after 30 minutes of action. After a 7-2 run to start the fourth for Thomas; the Eagles responded with their own 14-0 run while keeping the Terriers off the board for over three minutes down the stretch. That run would seal the conference victory for the Eagles.
Senior Bailey Donovan paced the Eagles with 19 points and 22 rebounds thanks in part to 9-of-9 from the free-throw line while graduate student Vanessa Duarte and sophomore Sophia McVicar each provided the Eagles with eight points.
It's back to the court tomorrow for the women's basketball team when they host Thomas College for a rematch at Newman Gym with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m. Prior to the contest, the program will honor Duarte for senior day. Tomorrow's contest is also the teams' annual Cancer/Alzheimer's awareness game when the Eagles take on the Terriers. We ask fans to either wear pink or purple to support the cause.
