WATERVILLE, Maine – The Husson University men's basketball team saw four players score in double-figures as the Eagles took down the Terriers, 80-72, at Larry Mahaney Gym on Friday night in North Atlantic Conference action.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the first half as the contest saw four lead changes early before either team took any control of the contest. In the final two minutes of the first half, the Eagles (9-11, 7-2 NAC) grabbed control with a 9-3 run including a layup from freshman Eric Ahlers before the buzzer sounded. It was 41-34 lead for the Eagles heading into the locker room.
Offense was limited to begin the second half for both teams as the Terriers (3-15, 2-7 NAC) slowly tied the game up with a 5-0 run. Ahlers would responded with a quick three to spark a 10-2 run for the Eagles en route to their highest lead of the contest at 65-56 with 7:30 remaining in the second half. The Terriers had one comeback attempt in the final stages of regulation. The Terriers were able to cut the Eagles' lead to as little as four with under a minute left, but a clutch layup from junior Jeremy Moronta put an end to any comeback hopes for Terriers.
Junior Scott Lewis scored a game-high 20 points while Moronta recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Luke Caruso fell just short of his career-high (12) with ten points. Off the bench, Ahlers scored ten points while senior J Thomas connected on three three-pointers for nine points.
It's back to the Newman Gym for the men's basketball team tomorrow when they host Thomas College at 5:00 p.m. for the second game of the home-and-home set with the Terriers. Tomorrow's contest also marks the program's annual Cancer/Alzheimer's awareness game when the Eagles take on the Terriers. We ask fans to either wear pink or purple to support the cause.
