CASTINE, Maine – The Husson University women's basketball dropped their first North Atlantic Conference game of the season with a 64-55 defeat to the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy at Smith Gym on Tuesday night.
The Mariners (11-5, 6-1 NAC) took a took a ten point lead, 18-8, into the second quarter when the offense for the Eagles (13-6, 7-1 NAC) started clicking. A 13-3 run by the Eagles saw them bring the Mariners' lead to within one before the Mariners rallied off four straight points for a 27-23 halftime lead.
The Eagles tied the game at multiple points in the third quarter but the Mariners kept responding as the home team took a one point lead into the final ten minutes of regulation.
The Mariners began the fourth quarter on a 11-2 run as the Eagles were unable to complete the comeback en route to the victory.
Graduate student Vanessa Duarte led the Eagles with 17 points while sophomore Hannah Richards scored 13. Senior Bailey Donovan secured 12 rebounds for the green and gold.
It's one more game on the road for the women's basketball team before they return to the Newman Gym. The Eagles will open a home-and-home with the Terriers of Thomas College with Friday's contest at Larry Mahaney Gym tipping-off at 5:30 p.m. in Waterville.
