BANGOR, Maine – Junior Scott Lewis swished a game-winning three pointer with 20 seconds left to give the Husson University men's basketball team a 64-61 North Atlantic Conference victory over SUNY Poly at Campus Center Gym on Friday night.
SUNY Poly (7-9, 2-4 NAC) jumped out to a 13-1 lead before the Eagles (6-8, 4-0 NAC) rallied for seven straight points. The Eagles would continue to battle back into the contest as they trailed by seven for most of the half before a three from senior Luke Caruso followed by a buzzer beat jumper from junior Jared Balser saw the Wildcats' lead cut to three at halftime.
Sophomore Corey Humbles scored the first five points of the second half to give Husson their first lead of the contest. The Wildcats would take the lead back with a 6-0 run before both teams would share the lead back-and-forth for the next 16 minutes before the Eagles would gain their biggest lead of the contest. Sophomore Milos Sujica was fouled on a lay up followed by an offensive rebound on a missed free throw as junior Scott Lewis capitalized with a jumper. It was a 59-55 lead for the Eagles with two minutes left when the Wildcats scored six straight points to take a two point lead with thirty seconds left. Lewis took the game into his hands with a three pointer followed by a steal by graduate student Justice Kendall. Kendall gave the ball to Jeremy Moronta who was immediately fouled. The junior made both shots from the charity stripe to extend the Eagles lead to three with six seconds remaining. The Wildcats would get an attempt off at the buzzer but it was no good as the Eagles win the conference affair.
Lewis finished the contest with a double-double as he tied his season-high with 17 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. Kendall chipped in 11 points and five assists while Moronta added nine points and 11 rebounds.
Tomorrow, the men's basketball team will travel west to close out the New York road trip as they take on Cazenovia College with tip-off set for 3:00 p.m.
