BANGOR, Maine - The Husson men's soccer team earned a non-conference victory over the University of New England by a 1-0 scoreline at Boucher Field on Wednesday night.
The Nor'easters (0-8-2) parked the bus in hopes of being able to attack on the counter as the plan worked effectively for the first half. The Eagles (5-2-2) held the ball most of the half and only a single shot on goal to show for it.
In the second half, it was much of the same until the 68th minute. UNE attempted to clear the ball and it only went as far as senior
Ben Shumway and from 30 yards out was able to feed a perfect through ball to the feet of sophomore
Arni Hreidarsson who took a turn and made a move on the keeper before sliding it into the empty net. That goal broke the deadlock and was the lone goal of the contest as senior
Benjamin Powell and the Eagles' defense forced the Nor'easters to only a single shot.
""We love to make games difficult for ourselves," said head coach
Gavin Penny. "The first half today was poor. We were too slow in possession and not looking for the right passes. We worked on a few things in training, but when we go off script and try to do other things, it doesn't work. I told the lads at half time to trust themselves and play with belief. They connected better in the second half and created many more chances. Football is all about chances, and we have to do better in front of goal. 13 opportunities to score, not including balls across there box without players attacking them, and only scoring one, makes it difficult to control the game. UNE hang in there and you always feel they might knick one. Fortunately, that didn't happen tonight and we'll take the three points. But we need to keep improving, at some point it won't go in our favor and we'll be kicking ourselves."
The men's soccer team will continue their homestand on Saturday as the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls will make the trip to Boucher Field for a 1:00 p.m. North Atlantic Conference fixture.
