WENHAM, Mass. - The Husson University men's soccer team took on the defending Commonwealth Coast Conference champions in Gordon College on Tuesday night at Brigham Athletic Complex and came away with a 1-1 draw despite trailing at halftime.
It was the host who opened the scoring as George Coogan IV capitalized on a breakaway as he chipped senior
Benjamin Powell in the 7th minute to give Gordon (1-4-2) a 1-0 lead.
Despite controlling the pace of play in the first half and landing three shots on goal; the Eagles (3-2-1) went into the second half down a goal.
In the 60th minute, sophomore
Arni Hreidarsson was brought on for a change off personnel and he awarded the team eight minutes later. A brilliant ball to edge of the box from freshman
Carlos Etchevers allowed the Icelandic through on goal and he made no mistake beating the keeper on the 1v1.
Both teams had chances to find the winner but after 90 minutes; the non-conference match finished, 1-1.
Powell made two saves in the net for the Eagles.
"I'm incredibly proud of this group of men tonight," said head coach
Gavin Penny. "It's extremely tough to play against Gordon, especially at their place. They do not stop running. But I thought we managed the game fantastically well. We pressed ever so well, moved the ball well, and created chances. There is somewhat of a negative feeling around like we lost the game because we deserved to win. Tonight we proved that we can play against the best of them. We thoroughly dominated possession and played most of the second half in their half of the field. It didn't happen for us, but we cannot hang our heads. We have a long weekend of football coming and we'll be looking to keep improving."
It's back to North Atlantic Conference action on the weekend as SUNY Delhi travel to Boucher Field for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Saturday as the men's soccer team will begin a six game homestand.
