BANGOR, Maine — Husson University volleyball picked up a five-set victory on Wednesday evening over the University of Southern Maine led by sophomore
Julia Leavitt's career-high 24 kills.
Husson (2-4) trailed the Huskies 21-18 nearing the end of the first set, but Leavitt tallied two of her 24 kills, along with an ace by sophomore
Alyvia McIntyre and two USM attack errors to take a 23-21 advantage.
Southern Maine would go on to win the next two points to knot the opening set at 23-23, but Leavitt put down back-to-back kills to give the Eagles a 25-23 set one victory.
The resilient Eagles would take a 2-0 set advantage with another 25-23 set two victory, again trailing 21-18 before benefiting from three McIntyre aces, a kill from senior
Cheyenne Young and a Huskies attack error to pull ahead 23-21 and hang on for the set win.
Southern Maine (1-6) rebounded in the third set to pull with 2-1 of the Eagles with a 25-19 set win and evened the match 2-2 with a 25-21 set four decision.
Husson would not go quietly though as the Eagles showed their resilience in the fifth and deciding set, winning 15-8. McIntyre would add two more service aces in the final set, while both Young and Leavitt would help give Husson its first win over Southern Maine since 2013, snapping a 14-game losing skid against the Huskies.
Leavitt finished with a 24-kill, 14-dig double-double, committing just three attacking errors on the night for a .477 hitting percentage. Young also finished with double-digit kills adding 15 and 11 digs for the Eagles second of three double-doubles.
McIntyre tallied a 37-assist, 15-dig evening and graduate students
Amber Lemay and
Adrienne Beatty finished with 17 and 14 digs, respectively.
McIntyre also collected a career-high seven aces, while Young and sophomore
Alexa Beal added two blocks apiece.
Husson finished with a .199 hitting percentage for the match to go along with 53 kills, 12 aces and six blocks.
The Eagles will look to continue their momentum on Saturday when they host the University of Maine-Fort Kent at 6 p.m.
