STANDISH, Maine – The Husson University field hockey team fell short on opening night to the Monks of Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 2-0, in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at SJC Athletic Complex.
Monks freshman Maya Waryas broke through in the 11th minute of the game as she netted her first career goal for a 1-0 lead for Saint Joseph's (1-0).
Saint Joseph's struck again in the 57th minute of the game when senior Alexa Gutowski found the back of the cage off a senior Megan Quirion and senior Molly McCluskey insertion passes off a corner.
Husson (0-1) outshot the host, 16-12 and had 13 corner attempts compared to the Monks' 11.
Senior keeper Kimmie Goddard made six saves in the setback, as Monks sophomore goalkeeper Kassidy Collins earned the shutout with six stops on the day. Senior Mallory Fairbanks record her third career defensive save in the loss.
The Eagles return to play at home against Wellesley for a 6:00 p.m. start on Saturday, September 3rd.
