BANGOR, Maine – Freshman
Maddie Perkins scored 29 seconds into the second overtime to lift Husson University past Wellesley University, 2-1, in a hard fought non-conference field hockey contest at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex on Saturday night.
Husson (1-1) and Wellesley (1-1) both played a scoreless slatemate until the 46th minute when sophomore Rose Weseley netted her second goal of the season off a penalty corner. Junior River Schiff was credited with an assist on the play.
The 1-0 edge remained until three minutes later when, M. Perkins tallied her first career collegiate goal past the Blue's junior netminder Kyra Deehr-Lewis, knotting the game at 1-1.
Both teams had several scoring chances in the remaining minutes of regulation but failed to convert. As a result, the game ahead for extra play with a 7v7 10-minute overtime period.
The Eagles carried momentum late in the first extra frame and nearly scored on a M. Perkins shot in the 65th minute, but Deehr-Lewis was up to the task and turned away the attempt as this game was destined for another 7v7 10-minute overtime period.
The momentum that the Eagles gained in the final minutes of the first overtime carried over into the second as M. Perkins smacked a one-timer past Deehr-Lewis for the game-winner.
Husson held advantages in shots (13-9), shots on goal (6-2), and penalty corners (9-5) in the victory.
Senior Kimmie Goddard recorded a save for the Eagles while Deehr-Lewis posted four stops for the Blue.
Husson returns to action on Sunday when the host Wheaton (Mass.) for a non-conference game at 12 p.m.
