Baseball opens conference play with doubleheader split at NVU-Lyndon

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. - The Husson University baseball team opened North Atlantic Conference play on Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader split at Skip Pound Complex versus the Hornets of Northern Vermont-Lyndon. The Eagles won game one, 6-3, before losing game two on a walk-off. 

The Hornets (5-16, 1-1 NAC) came out stinging in the first inning of game one scoring three runs. That lead would hold until the fourth inning as the Eagles scored six unanswered runs to record the come from behind victory. 

The Eagles (8-12, 1-1 NAC) scoring started thanks to a two run single from freshman Tanner Evans as they cut the Hornets lead to 3-2. After a quick three outs from sophomore Harrison Lendrum on the mound; the Eagles took the lead. Sophomore Jackson Curtis doubled down the left field line as he brought home sophomore Akira Warren then back-to-back NVU-Lyndon's error gave the Eagles a 5-3 lead. In the sixth, senior Kobe Rogerson capped off the scoring with a single to left field as sophomore Ryan Robb closed out the contest as he pitched a perfect seventh inning. 

Senior Alex Smith started the game for Husson and lasted just over an inning before Lendrum took over and allowed two hits in four-plus innings. Robb and Lendrum each recorded two strikeouts during their appearance. 

The Eagles were down 1-0 in the second inning when they took the lead as junior James Lubanski singled to left field to score senior Ethan Stoddard then Lubanski and freshman Tanner Evans scored on a double from Warren. 

The Hornets would take the lead in the fifth after two homers in two innings but with one out in the seventh; senior Tyler Parke responded. He ripped a two run shot over the right field wall to tie the game. John Mahoney responded for the Hornets with a solo shot to walk it off. 

Senior Cam Graham started the game and allowed four runs on four hits before freshman Matt Wallingford and Robb each made an appearance in relief. 

The baseball team will get a couple days off before traveling back to Lyndonville on Friday as they close out their series with the Hornets before going to Rhode Island College on Saturday. Game one on Friday is set for noon.
