BANGOR, Maine - For the first time since 2014, and fourth time in program history; the Husson University men's soccer team are champions of the North Atlantic Conference. The Eagles defeated the SUNY Delhi Broncos, 1-0, after extra time thanks to a 95th minute winner from freshman Will Feldman.
It was a scoreless ninety minutes as the Eagles (15-3-2) kept pushing and pushing for the goal but the Broncos' (10-7-2) defense was able to keep the Eagles at bay including nine blocked shot as we headed to extra time.
The Eagles were able to find the breakthrough in the 95th minute when freshman Feldman was able to curl one from the left side of the box off a pass from freshman Carlos Etchevers.
The Broncos looked for the equalizer in the second overtime interval but sophomore Alex Rechsteiner came up big in goal as the Eagles came away with the 1-0 victory.
Rechsteiner joined sophomore Mosi Masimango and freshman Miguel Morales on the All-Tournament team as sophomore Mario Alvarez was named the Tournament-MVP.
"It's incredibly difficult to sum up today in words," said head coach Gavin Penny, "We have literally played the entire game in their half of the field. It's tremendously hard to break teams down who are so deep and compact the way Delhi were. We had to be patient and wore them down, and thankfully we have fantastic players on our bench who came into the game and won it for us. It has been a great season and we fully deserve to be champions. I'm so happy for the lads. It's been a long year of suffering to avenge our semifinal defeat last year. Today is our day and we are looking forward to seeing who we are picked against for the first round of the national tournament."
The Eagles will await the NCAA selection show on Monday to find out their destination for the first round of the Division III NCAA Tournament. The selection show will take place on the NCAA website at 1:30 p.m.
