NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. — The Husson University women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 75-64 decision to host UMass Dartmouth in its opening game of the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament on Saturday evening.
UMass-Dartmouth (2-0) began Saturday's meeting with a 21-12 opening quarter run over the Eagles, but Husson (1-1) rebounded in the second quarter winning the frame 26-20 to pull within 41-38 of the Corsairs at the break.
Both teams battled back-and-forth to begin the third quarter, but UMass-Dartmouth ended the third quarter on an 11-2 run to open up a 61-52 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The Corsairs would lead by as many as 12 to begin the fourth quarter and up until the 5:45 mark before freshman
Sydney Loring connected on a 3-point attempt to pull Husson within 66-57 with 4:53 remaining.
Junior
Bailey Donovan connected on a layup attempt on an excellent pass from Loring to cut the lead to 66-59, but that would be as close as the Eagles would get because in the following possession, UMass-Dartmouth connected from deep to make the deficit double-digits.
Junior
Makaelyn Porter led the Eagles with 15 points adding three rebounds and three assists.
Donovan tallied her second-straight double-double, pulling down a game-high 14 boards and scoring 14 points.
Senior
Vanessa Duarte also finished with double-digit points for the Eagles at 10, while junior
Trinity Montigny tallied seven points.
The Eagles will battle St. Lawrence University at noon on Sunday in the final game of the Lafrance Hospitality Tournament.
