Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. — The Husson University football team closed out the regular season with a 24-10 loss to the Seahawks of Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon at Toppa Field in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.
The Seahawks' (6-4, 3-3 CCC) offense was able to figure things out right from the start as they drove down the field on the first drive of the game but the Eagles' (5-5, 4-2 CCC) defense made the drive stall at their 11-yard line. Salve Regina's kicker Dylan Hallett attempted a 28-yard field goal but senior Chevan Osbourne was able to get a block and keep the Rhode Island school off the scoreboard.
Husson's first drive lasted ten plays before they failed to convert on a fourth down which gave the ball back to Salve Regina and they would score on their next drive. A ten-play, 64-yard drive was capped off by Joey Mauriello scoring on an 18-yard score.
The second quarter saw Hallett convert on a 28-yard field goal followed by Mauriello's second touchdown of the game to give the Seahawks a 17-0 lead. With less than a minute in the first half; the Eagles got on the board. Senior Jon Bell took a kickoff to the house for a 93-yard score and send the Eagles into the halftime break with some momentum.
The third quarter saw zero points scored as both teams combined for three turnovers. The Eagles recovered two fumbles thanks to junior Adam Bertrand forces both fumbles with senior Sean Savage and junior Alex Brown each recovering a fumble. The Seahawks recorded their turnover via an interception from junior Nic Visser.
Eagles began the fourth quarter on offense and they was able to reduce the Seahawks' lead to seven as senior Aaron Paradis split the uprights with a 30-yard field goal. It was 17-10 in the final minues of the game when Salve Regina put the game to bed with Mauriello's third rushing touchdown of the game.
Visser finished the day as he went 19-for-28 with 125 yards in the air while freshman Jed Lober led the effort on the ground with 77 yards on 154 carries. Junior Tucker Buzzell added to his single-season tackle record as he led the defense with ten tackles while junior Tyrek Mann recorded a sack.Â
Despite the loss, the Eagles finished second in the CCC standings and await to find out if their efforts have earned them a bowl game.
