HENNIKER, N.H. – Sophomore Domingo Infante played hero as he scored a 87th minute header to give the Husson University men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over New England College in their final road regular season contest at Don Melander Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Pilgrims (5-7-1) took advantage of a defensive mistake by the Eagles (11-3-2) defense just 44 seconds into the game as Connor Manteau used the luck of the post to beat the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.
From that point on; it was all Eagles. The attacking pressure finally was rewarded in the 35th minute when sophomore Mario Alvarez connected on a cross with freshman Patricio Reygadas for his third goal of the season as his header sent the match into halftime at one-all.
The second half saw chance after chance as it took until the 88th minute when senior Jarod Bolton whipped a cross into the box and found Infante and he tucked in a volley into the bottom corner for the winner.
Sophomore Alexander Rechsteiner made three saves for the victory.
"We love to make it hard for ourselves," said head coach Gavin Penny. "31 shots, 31 chances!! How many does it take?? We play with the ball so much and dominate possession, but we are not doing enough with it. We need to be more dangerous, more threatening. NEC had 5 touches total today before scoring, only 3 players touched the ball. I'm hoping we can learn from our current form. Yes we have done enough to secure the points but we need to be better. We will not achieve our goals this year if we don't improve. I'm happy that we got the win, and we found a way to get the job done."
There is one final regular season fixture for the men's soccer team as they take on Maine Maritime Academy for senior day on Saturday at Boucher Field with game set for 1 p.m. and senior day ceremonies prior.
