Husson Baseball Defeats Thomas to Capture the NAC East Division Championship

BANGOR, Maine - After a dominating 12-0 win by the Husson Eagles (20-6) in game one, the Thomas College Terriers (12-12) battled back in game two holding a lead over the Eagles for the majority of the game until Husson tied up the score in the seventh inning, 6-6. A huge ninth inning rally helped Husson break open the floodgates, sending four Eagles home to help capture the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division Title. 

GAME 1: Husson 12, Thomas 0

Escaping a bases-loaded first inning in the field, Husson turned around and started swinging as they scored two early runs in the bottom half of the inning. David LeBlanc ripped a single to center field to score Arika Warren from second. Two batters later, Kobe Rogerson took advantage of a wild pitch and trotted home to leave the score, 2-0 Husson, after one. 

An impressive defensive display from the Eagles with three consecutive 1-2-3 innings, led to another run scored offensively for Husson in the bottom of the fifth.  A double down the left field line from LeBlanc, scored Rogerson to put the Eagles ahead, 3-0.

The Eagles put game one to bed in the seventh and eighth inning with a combined nine runs including homers from LeBlanc and Tyler Parke to help secure a 12-0 victory.

ON THE MOUND 

Cam Graham pitched a complete game shutout for his fourth victory of the season. The southpaw struck out seven with four looking as he allowed four hits. 

Ryan Scepansky fell to 4-3 on the season as he went six innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits. Hunter Glowa, John Villaneuva, and Evan McLean rounded out the pitching for the Terriers by combining for two innings pitched and giving up five earned runs.

OFF THE BAT

  • David LeBlanc went 4-for-4 while driving in five runs and a homer. 

  • Shane Macneill, Jacob Perry, Kyle Gleason, and Devin Grindle each contributed a hit. 

  • Kobe Rogerson scored four runs and blasted a pair of doubles.

 

GAME 2:  Husson 10, Thomas 7

After a scoreless first inning, both teams got on the board in the second. Jackson Curtis drove in the lone Eagles run on a sacrifice fly. Then the Terriers followed up in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out double to the left field fence by Lucas Harmon, scoring two runs. Kyle Gleason kept the scoring going with an RBI single down the left field line to send Gleason home and give Thomas their first lead of the day, 3-1, after two complete.

Husson didn't take long to even the score,  as a two-run RBI double down the right field line from Chris Ewanik sent David LeBlanc and Akira Warren flying home for a 3-3 tie in the top of the third. 

The Terriers didn't waste any time to reclaim their lead as Gleason cleared the bases with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth. Macneill lifted Thomas' lead to three runs after stealing third and making his way home on a stray ball, to head into the sixth inning with a 6-3 advantage.

A huge seventh inning helped liven up the Eagle bats Nick Swift scored on a groundout to short. With bases loaded, Brandon Smith hit a short pop up into center field as Warren ran home. A high pop in the infield helped send LeBlanc home as the Eagles once again evened the score, 6-6. 

Husson rallied four more runs home in the top of the ninth to take over a four-run lead before Thomas started a rally of their own. The Terriers were able to send home Gleason to cut the score to 10-7 before Ryan Robb stepped onto the mound to close and shut down the final batter for the Husson win. 

ON THE MOUND

Brandon Brunell opened up the game on the mound lasting 4.1 innings while striking out five, before Jackson Thayer stepped in to close out the fifth inning. Jake Gregoire pitched a solid 3.1 innings with three strikeouts and Robb closed out the final two outs of the win for the Eagles.

Dylan Copeland lasted 8.0 innings on the mound for the Terriers, fanning four Eagles while giving up four earned runs. Jacob Lacroix and Nicholas Howard finished out the final inning for Thomas, combining for two strikeouts.

OFF THE BAT 

  • Chris Ewanik produced a 3-for-4 appearance at the plate with two RBI and one run.

  • The lead-off batter for Thomas, Gleason hit 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

  • Jackson Curtis helped the Eagle offense with a 3-for-4 day including three RBI and scoring one run.

UP NEXT!

Capturing the NAC East Division Title, the Husson baseball team will host the winner of the West Division for the NAC Championship next week. The best-of-three series is scheduled for next week at Husson University on the Harold Alfond Diamond.
