Eagles Extend Winning Streak with Saturday Sweep of Hornets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BANGOR, Maine - The Husson baseball team displayed timely hitting and solid pitching on Saturday, as the Eagles swept Northern Vermont University-Lyndon in a doubleheader on the Alfond Diamond, extending their winning streak to eight games.

GAME ONE: Husson 3, NVU-Lyndon 1

The Eagles broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead. Brandon Smith drew a walk, then came all the way around to score on Nick Swift's two-out RBI double to left-center, beating the throw home on a head first slide.

Husson added another run in the third, after Kobe Rogerson's one-out triple to right center. Tyler Parke's sac fly to left brought him home to put the Eagles up 2-0.

Husson extended its lead to 3-0 in the fifth, when Akira Warren led off the bottom half of the inning with a triple to right center, and Rogerson drove him in with a deep sacrifice fly to left.

NVU-Lyndon got a run back in the top of the sixth, but it wasn't enough, as Husson went on to win, 3-1.

ON THE MOUND

Cam Graham (2-1) got the win in his third start of the year for the Eagles. He pitched five and one-third innings, giving up a run on three hits, while striking out seven. Jake Gregoire came on to record the final five outs while earning his first career save.

Cooper Whitehouse (0-1) got his first start of the season for NVU-Lyndon. He went all six innings for the Hornets, allowing three runs on five hits, with five strikeouts and four walks.

AT THE PLATE

  • Nick Swift went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

  • Kobe Rogerson had a triple, and an RBI in two plate appearances, and also scored a run.

  • Akira Warren was 2-for-2 with a triple and a run scored.

GAME TWO: Husson 3, NVU-Lyndon 2

Husson got right to work at the plate in the bottom of the first. Nick Swift and David LeBlanc drew back-to-back walks with one out. Swift then crossed the plate on Chris Ewanik's RBI single to right to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

Husson manufactured another run in the second when James Lubanski walked, moved to second on Evan Holzworth's sacrifice bunt, and came in on Akira Warren's single through the left side, making it 2-0 Eagles.

NVU-Lyndon picked up a run in the top of the third, and another in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 2-2.

Husson regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Brandon Smith and Tyler Parke walked to start the inning. Both runners advanced on a balk, so Holzworth was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Parke scored the go-ahead run when the Hornet's were unable to turn the double play on Akira Warren's ground ball to short. NVU-Lyndon got the force at second, but the throw to first to end the inning was not in time, and Husson took a 3-2 lead into the top of the seventh.

The Hornets put two runners on in the top of the seventh in a bid to tie or take the lead. But with two outs, LeBlanc ended the game with a spectacular diving catch on a sinking liner in right center, preserving the Eagles 3-2 win.

Logan Sheridan made his first start of the year for Husson, and pitched two scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and walked two. Sheridan was replaced by freshman Jackson Thayer to start the third inning. The appearance was Thayer's third of the season. He gave up a run without allowing a hit, on one walk with two strikeouts. In the fifth, Jesse Colford came on, making his sixth appearance of the year.
