Baseball Sweeps Five-Game Set with UMF with 6-5 and 6-1 Victories over the Beavers on Sunday

FARMINGTON, Maine - Husson University (5-4, 5-0 NAC-East) swept a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division baseball doubleheader versus University of Maine at Farmington (0-6, 0-5 NAC) at Hippach Field on Sunday afternoon to complete the five game series sweep. The Eagles opened with a 6-5 triumph and completed the sweep with a 6-1 nightcap victory.

HUSSON 6, UMAINE-FARMINGTON 5:

Husson opened the first game with a run off three hits and a UMF error in the top of the first, when Kobe Rogerson scored on a UMF miscue.

UMaine-Farmington found the board in the bottom of the third on a Hunter LaBossiere sacrifice fly that sent Aric Belanger home tying the game at 1-1. The Eagles responded quickly in the top of the fourth, when Brett Riffe was plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded, making the game 2-1.

In the bottom half of fourth, the Beavers once again tied the game up, this time on a solo shot by Jordi Valls. A Chris Ewanik bomb gave the Eagles lead once again but UMF counter one more time on back-to-back RBI singles by LaBossiere and Riley Bartell for a 4-3 advantage after five innings played.

The Eagles took the lead for good in the in the top of the sixth on a three-run homerun by David LeBlanc. UMaine-Farmington added a single run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by Danny Terhune to account for the 6-5 final score.

ON THE MOUND:

Hunter O'Connor started the game for the Eagles, allowing three runs off five hits with a strikeout over 4.1 frames. Blake Slicer, Logan Sheridan, Jack Corey and Ryan Robb combined to allow two runs off three hits with two punch-outs over the final 3.2 innings. Sheridan was credited with the victory, while Robb picked up his first career save.

UMF starter Ryan Pratt yielded two runs (one earned) off four hits and three walks while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings. Brice Springer took the loss after allowing four runs off five hits and two walks in 3.1 innings.

OFF THE BAT

  • LeBlanc was 1-2 with three RBIs and a homerun.
  • Ewanik went 2-3 with a RBI and a homerun.
  • Nick Swift recorded a 2-4 day.
  • Rogerson and Jackson Curtis each had a double in the victory.
  • For UMF, LaBossiere was 2-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Terhune went a perfect 3-3 on day with a RBI.

HUSSON 6, UMAINE-FARMINGTON 1:

The Eagles grabbed the early lead in the top of the first, when the visitors plated two runs off three hits to secure a 2-0 cushion. Rogerson lead-off the game with single and stole second to set the stage for LeBlanc's and Ewanik's back-to-back RBI doubles.

UMF cut the Eagles' cushion to 2-1 in the bottom of the first, when Terhune scored on a RBI single by Valls.

The 2-1 advantage remained until the third inning, when the Eagles struck for a run off a hit to claim a 3-1 lead. After Swift walked leading off the inning, LeBlanc came to the plate knocked Swift home with his second RBI double of the game.

Husson added a run in the fifth and the two runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by LeBlanc and Jackson Curtis' first career home run to account for the 6-1 final score.

ON THE MOUND:

Alex Brooks started the game for the Eagles and went 3.1 innings, allowing one earned run off three hits with two strikeouts. Zain Fitzimmons and Jesse Colford pitched the final 3.2 innings in scoreless relief of Brooks, yielding just two hits with three punch-outs. Fitzsimmons was credited with the victory.

Riley Bartell look the loss for the Beavers after allowing four runs off six hits and two walks with three k's in 5.0 innings. Troy Johnson pitched the final 2.0 innings, yielding two runs off five hits with two strikeouts.

OFF THE BAT:

  • Rogerson went 2-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
  • LeBlanc went 2-3 with a run scored, two doubles and three RBIs.
  • Ewanik was 2-4 with a double and a RBI.
  • Brandon Smith was 2-4 with a run scored and a double
  • Curtis had a 1-4 day with two RBIs and a homerun.
  • For UMF, LaBossiere, Johnson, Valls, Tyler Lambert and Cal Tibbits each had a hit in the setback.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the five game series sweep, Husson improves to 131-41 in the history of the series that dates back to 1939 with the University of Maine at Farmington.

Husson returns to action Thursday when the Eagles open the five-game set with Northern Vermont University-Lyndon at Lyndon. The single nine inning game's first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
