Last Second Comeback Attempt Squashed by Monks as Eagles Drop Home Opener, 2-1

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine - Despite a last second shot fired by Husson's Ryley Newcomb from the stroke line, the Saint Joseph's (Maine) goaltender sweeped a leg out just in time to block the shot off her pads as the clock ran out on the scoreboard to finalize the Monks' 2-1 victory at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex in Husson field hockey's home opener.

IN THE ACTION:

Monks' Emma Rutledge started off the night with a quick goal assisted by defender Alexandra Belaire only 1:59 in the first quarter as St. Joe's took advantage of the first penalty corner of the night. Just minutes later, rookie goalie Kimmie Goddard made a key save stopping a breakaway led by Monk's midfielder Sophia Jacques.

Meghan Hill gave the Monks a 2-0 advantage in the second quarter, receiving a perfectly slotted ball behind the Husson defender from Rutledge following a slew of passes up the field starting off with a turnover caused by Jacques at the midfield line.

The Eagles made it on the board three minutes before halftime to cut the deficit in half, as Adelle Foss slyly deflected a ball off the stick of fellow rookie Katie Perkins into the back of the net. Both first year's earned their first collegiate points as they brought the Eagles back in the game.

Husson brought the pressure in the second half, seeing more offensive opportunities on their opponents end, but neither team being able to solidify another point until the final seconds of the game when Husson forward Newcomb rifled a shot that was blocked away by Monks' goalkeeper Isabella Anton right as the final buzzer went off.

THE KEEPERS:

Goddard recorded eight saves in net for the Eagles. Monk's starter Alexandria Simpson stopped one shot on goal for St. Joe's while Anton secured the victory playing the final 30:00 minutes in net for the Monks.
