Baseball Drops First Doubleheader of The RussMatt Central Florida Invitational to WPI

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Husson University baseball team (0-2) dropped both games on their opening day doubleheader against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (9-1) at Lake Myrtle Sports Park on Saturday morning. The Goats opened up game one with an 8-0 victory and took game two, 22-0.

GAME ONE – WPI 8, Husson 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Goats opened up the game, 1-0, with a run in the second inning as David Larson ripped the ball over the left field fence. He followed up his first at bat with a double to the opposite field to help power a huge third inning for WPI as the Goats tacked on another six runs bringing their lead to 7-0 over the Eagles.

Husson had some trouble getting their bats going against Larson on the mound as they left five Eagles on base.

The Goats added some insurance in the bottom of the fifth, but HU held WPI scoreless to close out the final two innings of game one in the doubleheader, 8-0.

ON THE MOUND:

Jesse Colford (0-1) opened up the 2019 season on the mound for the Eagles seeing nearly three innings before Dustin Smith entered the game as relief in the top of the third. Kyle Bourget came into play, only allowing one hit in his six batters faced.

David Larson (1-0) went 6 innings for WPI, striking out ten batters while only walking one. Keith Scales closed out the final inning for the Goats with a quick 1-2-3 inning.

OFF THE BAT – HUSSON:

OFF THE BAT – WPI:

  • Martin McCormack went a perfect 2-2, scoring two runs with a pair of hits.
  • Larson drove the ball beyond the fence for a homer while adding on a double.
  • Five players accounted for the eight runs scored by WPI.

GAME TWO – WPI 22, Husson 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

WPI got off to another hot start in game two, as they put six runs up on the board early in the second inning. Despite sending the Goats back to the dugout empty handed in the fourth and fifth, the Goats found their groove hanging a crooked number as they plated five runs in the top of the sixth inning to help add on to a final result of 22-0.

Snapping WPI Tyler Weiss' no-hitter, Kobe Rogerson singled a hard shot to right field to grab Husson's lone hit of the afternoon as he advanced to second on a passed ball, but was left stranded in the bottom of the sixth.

ON THE MOUND:

On the mound for Husson to start game two was Cam Graham (0-1), pitching the first three innings. Jacob Gauvin and Nolan Dousa took a turn pitching in the fourth and fifth innings over without giving up a single hit or run. Four more Eagles saw time on the mound before Luke Covey entered the game in the seventh inning to finish it off.

Weiss (1-0) pitched six full innings for WPI, allowing only one hit, no runs or walks, and ten strikeouts. Dominic Fusco came in for relief to finish out the final inning added on two more K's.

HUSSON HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Kobe Rogerson went 1-2 with a single to put a stop to the no-hit bid.
  • Alex Chapman and Rogerson combined for two double plays.

WPI HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Ryan Tropeano hit 2-4 with three RBI on two hits.
  • Tyrone Patterson and Josh Herlands both whacked the ball over the fence while Patterson added on a triple. Both helped earn the win with two RBI apiece.
