Husson Beats Maine Maritime in Regular-Season Finale

Box Score

CASTINE, Maine—Husson (Husson 5-7, 4-3 NAC) defeated Maine Maritime (3-10, 3-4 NAC) 14-10 in their regular-season finale.

The first half of the game proved to be an offensive affair, with both teams combining for 19 first-half goals.  Maine Maritime got on the board first with a goal from Chase Whittemore, but the Eagles quickly fired back.

Zach Glazier kept up his hot streak as of late and scored Husson's next two goals before teammates Brooks Gay and Jacob Boothby got in on the action.  Boothby took advantage of opportunities when he had them, and his first two scores of the game were up-goals.  Adam Littlefield also added one more tally for the Eagles before Whittemore and Andrew Waltz put in two late goals to end the first quarter.

Husson came roaring out of the gates to start the second quarter with three unanswered goals from Gay, Boothby, and Mitch Spurr to give the Eagles a commanding six-goal lead.

Whittemore quickly fired back with a score of his own for the Mariners, but just as it seemed Maine Maritime would get some momentum going, Husson would hop right back in to halt any meaningful scoring run.

This time around it was Blaine Miller on an assist from Boothby that threw a wrench in Maine Maritime's plan with his goal just two minutes after Miller's.

The Mariners weren't just going to lie down, however.  Tyler County added an up-goal for Maine Maritime and Whittemore scored his third goal of the game.  Glazier came back with his own goal to complete the first-half hat trick, but Dean Samuelson scored just 30 seconds later for the Mariners to make it a three-goal game heading into halftime.

For all of the scoring in the first half, the second half was void of any such offensive onslaught.  Husson's Boothby and Maine Maritime's Alex Grant-Roy scored the only goals of the whole third quarter, bringing the game to a 12-9 Husson lead to start the final period.

Grant-Roy scored early in the quarter to give the Mariners all the momentum as the game trickled down, but Matt Verrill proved to be the thorn in the side of Maine Maritime.  Verrill added two fourth quarter goals and the Eagles locked down on defense to walk out of Castine with an important 14-10 conference win.

Nick Zavorotny played a great game between the posts for Husson, making 12 saves on 22 shots and allowing 10 goals.  Mariners goaltender Daniel Lee stopped 14 of his 28 shots faced while giving up 14 goals.

The Eagles and the Mariners will meet up again Sat. Apr. 29 for game one of the NAC Quarterfinals at a location to be announced.
