Baseball Picks Up Two Wins at Lyndon State, 5-0, 9-4

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – The Husson University baseball team defeated Lyndon State College in two North Atlantic Conference games, 5-0 and 9-4, on a wet Saturday afternoon at Skip Pound Field.

Game 1

An RBI-single to right field from Christian Corneil broke open the scoring in the top of the first inning for the Eagles.

The Eagles picked up two runs in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead.  Sam Huston singled to left to plate Logan Rogerson then Corneil added another RBI-single to bring home Ryan Rebar.  The Eagles tried to notch another run on an overthrow to third on the same play but Huston was thrown out at home by catcher Trevor Markey (Ocoee, Fla.).

The Hornets threatened in the bottom of the fourth as Andre Eason Jr. (Waterbury, Conn) singled to start the inning.  Markey sacrificed Eason Jr. to second on a bunt, then Eason Jr. took third on a wild pitch.  Unfortunately, the Hornets were unable to get him home.

Husson tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh.  A single up the middle from Mike Wong scored Cam Archer and then three batters later Alex Chapman drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Wong for the 5-0 final score.

Devon Rollins (Winooski, Vt.) cracked two hits to lead the Hornets offensively.  Zak Johnson (East Hampton, Conn.) took the loss in five innings of work while allowing eight hits and three runs.

Ben Walls pitched a complete-game shutout while giving up four hits.

Game 2

Things started off better for Lyndon in the second game as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the bottom of the first inning.  Devon Rollins led off the inning with a walk and then moved to second on a ground out.  Eason Jr. then reached on an error while moving Rollins to third.  Jason Doris (Lincoln, R.I.) singled through the right side, plating Rollins for the Hornets' first run of the day.  Zak Johnson then followed with a single to left, bringing home Eason Jr.

After a scoreless second inning, Corneil added to an already solid day with a three-run homer to put the Eagles up 3-2 in the top of the third.

The Eagles added three runs to their lead in the top of the fourth with Wong hitting an RBI-single through the left side to plate Archer.  Two batters later, Huston doubled to bring home Wong and Rebar for a score of 6-2.

Codi Smith (Hartford, Vt.) led off the bottom half of the inning with a double and after the Eagles recorded two straight outs Devon Rollins smashed a double to center to score Smith to close the gap to 6-3.

Husson continued to find the holes in the Lyndon defense, adding three more runs in the top of the sixth inning.  A Huston single drove in Logan Rogerson and Wong for the 8-3 lead.  With the bases loaded, David Hutchins brought in Huston from third on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to center to finish the Eagle scoring with the 9-3 lead.

The Hornets were able to tack on one run in the bottom of the seventh.  With runners on first and third, Zach Hale (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) singled to right to plate Doris to finish out the scoring at 9-4.

Davis Guyer (Lyndon, Vt.) received the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in four innings of work.  Dennis Farnham (Orono, Maine) threw two innings in relief, allowing five hits and three runs (one earned).  Matt Page (Groton, Vt.) pitched one inning of scoreless relief.

Jesse Colford grabbed the win on the mound for the Eagles after throwing six innings and giving up three runs on seven hits.  Jacob Gauvin gave up one run in one inning of relief.

The Hornets (14-12, 7-7 NAC) and the Eagles (18-12, 11-5 NAC) are back at it again Sunday for another doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. as Lyndon celebrates Senior Day.
