Box Score BANGOR, Maine – Cam Archer's RBI single in the bottom of sixth inning snapped a 4-4 tie to lead the Husson University Eagles to a 5-4 win over Colby College Mules in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at Harold Alfond Diamond at Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex.
Husson (21-19) jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the first, as Mike Wong walked with one out and moved to third on Julien Boone's double down the left field line. Zach Sugar then hit an infield single to score Wong and Boone scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles the 2-0 lead.
A RBI single up the middle by Boone extended the Eagle lead 3-0 in third.
The lead was short-lived, as Colby (11-21) answered back tying the game in the top of the fourth. Andrew Currier ripped a single to right field scoring Zach Ellenthal and Soren Hanson to cut the deficit to one after Husson pitcher Joe Skoczylas issued three straight walks to load the bases with one out and Tommy Forese tied the game on the very next pitch with a RBI single to left field.
The Eagles responded right back with a run in the bottom of the fourth when Archer singled to left field sending Alex Chapman home for a 4-3 advantage.
The Mules then rallied to score a run in the sixth tying the game at four on a two out RBI single by Currier before Husson took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning when Archer singled to center field plating Chapman with the go ahead run.
Matt Smith, Kyle Bourget and AJ Purcell kept the Mules off the board for the remaining three innings to secure the 5-4 victory for the Eagles.
Austin Smith (1-1) was credited with his first collegiate victory after pitching one inning of one-hit ball allowing one earned run with a walk while throwing 12 of 20 pitches for strikes. Conor Maguire started the game but did not factor into the decision after retiring all nine batters he faced with a punch-out over three innings.
Skoczylas, Dustin Smith, M. Smith, Bourget and Purcell combined to yield three runs off five hits with four walks over five innings. Purcell was credited with the save.
Boone and Archer led the Eagles with two hits while Archer added two RBI. Boone and Christian Corneil were credit with a double and Chapman a triple.
Currier led the Mules with two hits and three RBI's while Benjamin Crocker (two hits), Forese and Noah Tocci accounted for the rest of the Colby hits in the setback. Dan Csaplar (2-2) took the loss in relief of starter Bobby Forese after allowing two earned runs off nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Forese allowed three earned runs on four hits while walking two and fanning two over 3.0 innings.
The Eagles will return to the diamond on Friday in Castleton, Vt. when they face Maine-Farmington in game two of the North Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Colby will play host to University of Maine on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
