Eagles Fall Short Against Spartans on Senior Day

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine – A twenty three save performance by freshman keeper Matt Martin and the defensive play of seniors Ben Morris and Derek Johnson and sophomore Devin Campbell wasn't enough as Castleton came from behind to defeat Husson, 12-7 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon at John P. Boucher Field.

Husson (3-6, 3-1 NAC) saw their three game winning streak end while Castleton (7-4, 4-0 NAC) remained perfect in conference play and approves to 13-0 all-time versus the Eagles.

In a pregame ceremony senior's Morris, Johnson, Brandon Corbo, Stefan Smith, Jack White, Vinny Visconti, and Brett Martin were all recognized for their contributions to the Husson men's lacrosse program.

The Spartans scored the first goal of the game when Taylor Swarter found the back of the net on a feed from Tom Pardew for a man-up goal at the 13:20 mark. Husson evened it out at one a piece as Brooks Gay scored an unassisted with 9:14 remaining in the half. Swarter then responded for the Spartans with his second of game making it 2-1 after one.

The Eagles came alive in the second as White, Trent Sell, Corbo, and  each put the ball passed Spartans' keepers Peter Latulippe and Romello Lindsey giving Husson a 5-3 lead going to the intermisson, their first lead at half versus Castleton in five years. Sam Siegel scored the lone goal for the Spartans in the period.

The Spartans came out of the break hot scoring the first four goals of the second half to take a 7-5 heading into the fourth. Castleton received goals from Zach Devoid and Pardew and two from Jason Sedell in the period.

A man-up goal by B. Martin one minute and five seconds into the fourth cut the Spartan lead to one but a unassisted goal by Siegel, his second of the game put Castleton back up by two with 11:48 remaining in the game.

The Eagles responded right back when Visconti found a wide open Sell standing right in front of the cage for his second at 10:35 before Castleton put the game away with five straight unanswered goals to close out the period for the 12-7 victory

For the Eagles, Trent Sell led the team with two goals on five shots with an assist, while Corbo, Gay, Visconti, White, and B. Martin netted a goal apiece. Johnson, Morris and Campbell were responsible for nine of the Eagles 24 caused turnovers on the day, while Johnson added a game-high eight groundballs. M. Martin record the most saves in a single-game by an Eagle keeper in eight years while tying Matt Linnell's single-game school record of 23. Linnell set the mark during the inaugural season vs. Mount Ida on April 15th, 2009.

Kyle Lutinski, Swarter, Pardew, Siegel, and Sedell netted two goals each, while Nick Rancourt and Deviod had one for the Spartans. Louis Alhage, Pardew and Seigel had assist while Latulippe and Lindsey combined to make six saves in the net.

The Eagles are right back at when they travel to Daniel Webster on Tuesday for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game. Castleton returns to action on Wednesday when they host Norwich for a non-conference battle under the lights. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
