Box Score Nashua, N.H. – After giving up an 11-9 lead by allowing two Brandon Bosse goals in the closing five minutes of play, senior Anthony Cotoni rescued the Daniel Webster College (DWC) hopes burying an unassisted tally with just 36 seconds remaining in regulation and DWC dodged a late bullet in the closing seconds to escape with a 12-11 victory Tuesday at Eagle Field.
Cotoni's gamer, his 35th of the season and third of the game, pushed the DWC back above .500 as they improved to 6-5, matching last season's wins total. Husson dropped its second straight falling to 3-7.
Husson had a chance to tie, winning the ensuing faceoff and called timeout with 21 seconds left. Off the break, Husson got a good shot from 20 yards out off of the stick of Blake Campbell, but DWC net minder Curtis Larade made the 13th and final save of his day preserving the victory.
DWC had led 11-9 in the fourth after David Downie potted his third of the game and 26th of the year with 6:49 left to give DWC their largest lead after Husson had held an 8-7 advantage late in the third.
But Husson rallied with two scores from Bosse – the first with 4:41 left and the second on the man advantage with 2:14 to go – to tie it.
Both Downie and rookie Tre Mason would lead Daniel Webster with six points on the day. Downie posted his three goals and assisted on three others while Mason buried four goals and added two helpers. Russell Applegate chipped in with a pair of markers and one setup.
Adam Letarte was DWC's best midfielder on the day, registering a game-high nine groundballs and forced a pair of turnovers.
Bosse led Husson with four scores while Brett Martin posted a 2-1-3 mark and Chad Merrill scored twice. Team points leader Brandon Corbo picked up two assists.
Matt Martin finished with 17 saves for the visitors.
DWC was 4 for 7 on the power play and held Husson to 1 for 8. The Eagles also finished with a 43-38 total shots advantage (29-24 on goal) and won the battle for grounders (46-38), helping negate Husson's wins in face offs (15-12) and clears (19-11).
DWC led 3-1 after one quarter and 5-4 at the half but Husson would outscore DWC 5-3 in the third for an 8-8 game after three.
Mason and Applegate had put DWC up 9-8 and 10-8 1:30 and 4:46 into the fourth quarter, respectively and Bosse netted his third of the game with 8:53 left to pull Husson within one at 10-9 before the final scoring back-and-forth.
DWC remains home to face Lyndon State on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. with an opportunity to tie the program all-time single season wins mark.
