Box Score BANGOR, Maine – Husson guard Chandler Guerrette's shot with 1.7 seconds left in the game helps prevail the Eagles to a 65-64 win over University of Southern Maine (USM) in non-conference action on Wednesday night inside The Newman Gymnasium.
Husson (6-3) wins its first game over the Huskies at home for the first time since 1992, while USM (6-6) loses its second consecutive game to the Eagles holding a 34-14 advantage in the series.
USM jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first few minutes of the first quarter, but a 14-0 run by Husson put The Eagles up by eight at the end of the quarter. The Eagles and the Huskies went back and forth in the second quarter as Husson lead 26-24 going into intermission.
The Huskies came out to start the third quarter on a 10-7 run which gave them their first lead since the game started. Husson battled and retook the lead with a 4-0 run with 2:23 minutes left in the third quarter. A back in forth battle between the Huskies and the Eagles went on until
Kenzie Worcester put back a go ahead three to lead the eagles 42-41 at the end of the third quarter.
Husson and USM could not get more than a three-point lead in the final ten minutes of play. Southern Maine's Ella Ramonas put the Huskies up by one with six seconds remaining in the game. Junior guard Guerrette answered back with a layup to give The Eagles a 65-64 victory with 1.7 seconds left.
Worcester scored 16 points, added five rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Guerrette finished with 15 points and
Victoria McIntyre added a game high seven rebounds for a impressive defensive display by The Eagles.
Southern Maine's Gretchen Anderson lead the Huskies with 16 points, six rebounds, and four steals while Ramonas and Megan Pelletier recorded 15 and 13 points respectively.
The Eagles return to the court on Saturday, January 9 as they travel down Castine to face Maine Maritime for a 1 p.m. conference game. The Huskies host conference rival Keene State for a 1 p.m tipoff as well.
